I used the V-Ray Displacement modifier, an image of a carpet in the diffuse channel and a photoshopped tiled map of some fabric in the displacement channel of the modifier.

Im getting closer to the light setup I want to use for my final renderings. I changed the floor tile size and added pews. I used some reference footage for the pews, but none of them fitted into the church. Remember that centuries ago people usually had to stand in the church, there were not seats to sit down, the most pews came later and were changed often, I guess.

I'm not yet satisfied with the wood material of the benchs and the depth effect of the whole composition. Also I think, I'm gonna increase the floor tiling resolution, at the moment the tiles are 100x100 cm, but after some research I found out, that 60x60 might be more appropriate.

A different light setup - Update: Floor tiling and floor material.

I used a photoshoped specular map for the floor tiles in order to make them look used. It's brighter in the center (more reflection) and darker in the corner. I made about 6 different materials (all put together in one Multimaterial), with 6 different diffusemaps, to get some variety and 3 different specularmaps, and spread all 6 materials with the MaterialByElement modifier.

Annotation: The more Geometry there is and the darker the place gets, the less accurate the GI will work. As this is a preview and I dont spend too much time on rendering yet, you will notice slight differences in brightness and sometimes small dark or light spots.

This comes especially from the biased GI engine (Irradiancemap and Lightcache). An alternative way to compute Global Illumination with V-Ray was a brute force GI, which means at least 64 or even more samples to get a noise-free image halfway.

If you begin to work on high detailed geometry with a lot of dark corners, be aware, that you might have to spend a long time on computing an accurate GI, especially in closed rooms.

I began creating an interior model of the cathedrale of Coutances, its a gothic notre-dame in the normandy.

Beginning with the crossing and the crossing tower, I already modeled parts of the long arm. Next step is apse and short arms. If time is left befor my exams i might also model entrance and pipe, altar and chapels near the entrance.

My footage are fotos and an unsharp floor plan.

I start my 3D blog with an artwork I finished lately:

My idea was to create a cat for compositing or making architecture viz pictures just nicer and just to keep on training modeling and stuff.

I used 3D Studio Max and Vray 1.5 as ive been working a lot with this combination and like the Vray Workflow for fast and easy GI and Materials Setup

The story of the scene is easy, I just like the little stupid look of the cat, and it looked younger than intended. When I noticed that I thought it would be a nice picture if I would let her play with that ball.

I. Research

I began gathering footage for cats shape and anatomy, if you miss these steps its almost impossible to create good models. I tried modeling characters before and just started modeling without any footage, it looked like crap and I ended up giving in.

These are most important for the rough model, you can just put them on a plane and model the torso right away. Try to find some pictures where the cat does not walk to model the legs at the right position.

Important: Domestic cats have different body proportions than their close relatives in wild life. I first made the big mistake to take some anatomy drawing of a wild cat ;)

The pictures of cats chins were pretty important to find as there are only a few of them and it helps you a lot to model the chin, I consider it to be one of the most important and difficult parts of the face, right after the area around the top lip and the nose. I found a lot of frontal pictures, they give you a good impression what shape cat eyes should have.

Such pictures can you help out to work on details, but as I wanted to make a cat with fur I didnt pay much attention to all shapes and details and skin folds etc.

II. The Mesh

I used boxmodeling on the body and began with a long box with several subdivisions and made the side shape of the cat:

I did not plan to animate the cat so I did not pay too much attention on clean loops and rings as you can see at the mouth, but I cleaned them up later on.

I looked at several front pictures and detail fotographys of the ear and made new loops to model details like the nose and in-ear stuff. I decided not to model the mouth interior. The cat finally had lips and a throat, but no teeth and no tongue

Thats a shot of the advanced model. I had to do several corrections on the nose, the nasal wings, the top lip and the chin. Those parts are very important to make a cat look realistic. Also the cheecks had to look more cat-like, but be aware that those cheecky impressions of a cat face are also made by fur.

Below you can see some in-ear detail, its no great deal as I just extruded the ear canal and modeled out some skin folds to look more like an ear. I put a lot of effort to model the white lid at the edge of the eye and the other lids, so the eye looks well integrated into the head.

The nose took finally a long time too, to get that triangle and the holes look good:

Finally i added legs and feet, the claws are very simple, they just need to blink out between the fur later:

III. Rigging

To be able to pose the cat I build a complete rig for the main body parts. I tried to imitate a real cat skeleton hierarchy as this was the first time i work on a cat rig. It was important to me not to need to freak around with a pure FK hierarchy, so I made all 4 legs IK with feet controllers with attributes to pose the paws.

For the front legs there is a center of gravity controller at the shoulder, the same for the backlegs at the hip, one controller at the middle of the chest to control the torso (stretchy bones) and a common center of gravity controller, where all the three cog controllers are parented to.

The tail has three FK controllers, the tail segments between each controller bend automatically via parameter wiring, so its easy to make some nice tail positions.

In this video you can see the main aspects of the rig, there are still bones and controllers for the skin, but I didnt use more than the lid dummys to adjust the eye shape.

IV. Hair&Fur

Thats the point where I've been aching most. Before I began working on the hair/haircut, I began with a dummyscene to test how hair and fur behaves with V-Ray and lighting.

Also a great problem was to make the V-Ray renderings look good with the hair, and I think, that I'm finally still not satisfied, as I'm still searching for a better solution.

I tried out several frizz and kink parameters to make it look furry and used finally a single spotlight for the hair pass, as V-Ray lights don't have an influence in the hair appearance.

Only a spotlight with "buffer" hair (see effects dialog, shortcut 8).

Mr prim hairs (guess these use voxel technique to compute) dont look that good and make it impossible to have nice hair tips at low render times, and mr prim hairs seem to generate a huge amount of geometry, that kills all your GI and render pass times.

I still used a spotlight for this one, but added GI.

The low frizz frequenzy make the hairs look like they glue together and dont look cat-like, because I think the hairs look too strong, too.

With a high frizz frequenzy you can see that hairs dont glue together no longer and thats better for a cat fur.

Doing the haircut for the cat was hard piece of work. The best way to do this, is to get a lot of reference footage and closeups, to see in which direction hairs grow and how long they are.

Face hairs are smaller and dont bend, tummy and breast hairs are the longest. Its important to but some effort into the cheek hairs, to make the cat look cheeky and nice and all-ppl-want-to-touch-it.

I know that the eyes are not too perfect ;) but its a good view to see the cheek hairs and ear shape.

For the whiskers I used very thin tubes, put a taper modifier on top to make them thinner to the end, and finally added a bend modifier to bend them.

This is my uncollapsed modifier stack and hair and fur settings. I used the Poly Select modifier to make a selection set for the hair modifier, as hairs must not appear in the eye socket, at the nose tip or the lips. Later on I made a second Hair and Fur WSM to make very thin hairs inside the ears.

V. Materials

As said in the beginning I used V-Ray for Rendering so I focused on using V-Ray Materials for the scene. You cant see eyes on that shot, but for the eyes I used a blend material. First Material (90%) is the diffuse map with pupils and iris and everything with reflection glossiness about 0.7, second Material (10%) is only reflecting (Refl. glossiness about 0.95)

For the inner of the ear I simply used a radial gradient which is lighter in the mid and has the color of the rest of the skin at the edge. The nose tip has a tad of a glossy materialy, but basicly all other parts of the body have only a color.

VI. Scene and Light setup

As background I used a fillet with a medium grey tone. The ball has a glossy fresnel reflection (0.6), that it doesnt look to noisy, I increased the sample rate to 48, finally I guess this was the part of the image, which took most time of rendering, it wasnt the 2 million hairs.

The light setup is pretty easy, there are two VRayLights, the left has an orange tone (Multiplier 6.0), the right one a blue tone (Multiplier 3.0). Additionally there is the spot for making the hair look better.

I used linear multiply color mapping, as hair and fur is apparently not capable of color mapping at all (it finally istnt rendered by V-Ray itself). Actually I prefer exponential color mapping for scenes like this.
